With this variant your looking at 18-26 mana at level 1 for a wiz or sorc, and up to like 35-40 by level 20 for examples, rather then that stupid 700+ shit from spell points/psionic methods. So as you level up, lower-tier spells cost less, but your highest will cost an arm and a leg. Spells cost an amount of mana based on your access to spells and the specific tier of spell your casting at the time. If your spell fails from spell failure, counterspells, dispels, antimagic fields, etc, you still lose that mana.

You must have the mana to cast the spell you wish to use before you even begin casting. You cannot regenerate mana while exhausted.

So, lets say you got 3 rounds before you gain 1 mana, and you take 1 mana damage or spend even 1 mana, you gotta wait the full 10 rounds again. Mana drain/damage/curses can outright stop mana regeneration, or reset this regeneration cycle as if you 'spent' a mana. They REGENERATE mana equal to 1 + 1/5 there caster level per minute (10 rounds) of not using any mana. If the caster class uses multiple abilities for spellcasting, then the one that grants bonus spells per day is the one to track mana. Mana pools are tracked seperately for each class and there spell lists, you cant use cleric spells with sorcerer mana, etc. They have mana equal to there casting ability score + 1/2 there caster level.

Metamagic is now applied when you cast the spell now, and not prepared, and increases the cast time for both prepared and spontanous casters, as there mechanics are now all the same. Prepared casters can only prepare one of each spell, and act like a spontanous caster. It was designed originally by someone on the Gitp forums, but I cant find the post anymore due to age i suppose? I will try to scale many encounters to compete with players, so what party is built will certainly factor into the campaign. I will be using pathfinder rules, but also allow any 3.5 material that doesn't have a direct conversion. This campaign will run from level 5 to approximately 12 or 13. I will be running a modified version of the Red Hand of Doom in the world of Eberron. "I am Azarr Kul, Son of the Dragon!" the warlord bellows. He stands upon a precipice and raises his arms high. A hundred bright yellow banners stand beneath him, each marked with a great red hand. One by one the tribes fall silent as the warlord rises, blue scales gleaming along his shoulders, horns sweeping back from his head. From the phalanx emerges a single champion. The Wormsmoke Mountains shake with the thunder of ten thousand screaming hobgoblin soldiers.
